ID theft is growing at an alarming rate, so here are a few tips for preventing identity theft that you should know about, to help keep your ID safe and secure. Check your statements every month and watch for charges that are not yours. By doing this you can sometimes catch the fraudulent activity much earlier than otherwise. You should also keep track and make sure all of your bills arrive to ensure they have not been redirected in an effort to steal your identity. You should never give out your social security number to anyone unless you know it is absolutely necessary. Far too many people give out the entire number without hesitation, yet this could be the first real piece of information they have to steal your identity. You can use the last four digits for identification rather than the whole number. If you are asked to create a password for an account, go the extra mile and choose one that no one would be able to guess. Don't use your birthday, your spouse's or your kid's birthday, your phone number, your address or any other easy to guess password. Online mix letters, numbers, and characters. And when asked for your mother's maiden name you could use her maiden name instead. If at all possible do not give out any personal information on the telephone. Fast talking con artists will have you believing they are legitimate and you really have no way of knowing otherwise. You also need to be careful online and be comfortable the site you are at is really who it says it is. One of the most effective ways of preventing identity theft is to simply keep your personal information quiet. Finally at least once a year request your credit report from the three main credit reporting agencies. Any discrepancies should be immediately addressed by notifying the agency. You will want to make sure it is not an attempt at identity theft. By the way you are entitled to one free report annually from each of the three main credit bureaus. Take them up on the offer to keep tabs on your credit. The theft of ones identification is a horrible crime and extremely frustrating as you are left with the aftermath of trying to clean up your identity and proving it wasn't you. These tips for preventing identity theft are a start in the right direction of keeping your identity safe.
